Public Television recently hosted an hour of Grand Canyon scenery paired with classical music masterpieces, Grand Canyon Serenade. I sat watching for the hour unable to move, just mesmerize by the magnitude of it. In a series for the next month I will be sharing different views of the Grand Canyon experience.
This spectacular program presents a stunning HD visual portrait of the Grand Canyon region set to the world-class music of some of the most beloved classical music composers such as Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and Dvorak. Viewers experience breathtaking panoramas and one of the most dramatic adventures on the planet in a meditative film journey that showcases the beauty and spiritual nature of one of America’s crown jewels.

The story of our national parks is a long and complicated one, full of competing demands between utterly American impulses – between preservation and exploitation, the sacred and the profitable; between the immediate desires of one generation and its obligation and promise to the next.
THIS IS AMERICA is a complete 45-minute film that tells the story of the national park idea through the prism of our nation’s diverse population, weaving together stories of extraordinary people from a wide variety of backgrounds who devoted their lives to the national park ideal – to preserve and protect these special places for everyone, for all time – and helped it broaden and evolve over the course of 150 years.
In celebration of fashion week I am celebrating designer Rebecca Minkoff. We both grew up in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego, I lived blocks away from her family and was the local babysitter on and off for a decade.
It was the 80’s, The Minkoff’s moved to Florida, and upon high school graduation Rebecca departed for NYC with dreams of designing.
She started RM with her brother Uri Minkoff, and after a succesful launch, and a beautiful Tuscan wedding to Gavin Bellour, she set her sites on expanding the RM brand. (Be sure to also check out her Ben Minkoff men’s line).
This video was originally shot one year ago 9/12/10 for her Spring Line launched March 2011. Created by Gavin Bellour, this is an intimate look into her creative process.
On September 12th, documentary filmmaker Gavin Bellour filmed CFDA fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff as she prepared for the presentation of her Spring/Summer 2011 collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
The road to Lincoln Center is documented in this short film which features appearances by Gossip Girl Michelle Trachtenberg and fashion blogger Rumi Neely of FashionToast.com.

This is a family run business. Uri is off the charts smart, graduating high school in about 16 months. With determination and a few PR courses under his belt, he talked his folks into eventually opening what became a 10,000 sqft wellness center. Later building his own successful internet development technology company.
Still acting as Chair of his companies, Uri set off to start the Rebecca Minkoff brand with his sister. 6 years later, they are still independently managed and self-financed.
Today she is at the top of her game, still partnering with her brother Uri and preparing to be a new mommy, while her husband Gavin provides fantastic visual images.

Every year around this time, I set out points North-East to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. One of my best friends shared this trip with me over 20 years ago, and in his honor I try to make my way before early Oct. closure. The solitude and beauty is breathtaking. I have shared this trip with many friends and family making for lasting memories of my own. In a series for the next month I will be sharing different views of the Grand Canyon experience. This NYTimes post caught my eye today, enjoy.
IF I CLOSE MY EYES, I can almost see Bright Angel Creek spilling into the Colorado River at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I’ve been here only twice and don’t know if I’ll ever make it again because it’s a long, hard trip down from the rim — seven miles, losing 5,000 feet in elevation, along the South Kaibab Trail, the way I hiked into the Big Ditch in 2004, or a slightly more gradual 9.3 miles along Bright Angel Trail, the route I took before that on the back of a mule.
Five million people a year stand on the rim taking a gander at the 277-mile-long chasm, a stirring sight to be sure. But for those who make it down to the river there’s something even better: a strange little patch of paradise, halfway to the center of the Earth, it seems, where layers of ancient rock and a raging river speak eternal verities.
I’d imagined going there ever since my grandma gave me Marguerite Henry’s 1953 children’s classic “Brighty of the Grand Canyon,” about a free-spirited burro that toted water up and down the North Rim along Bright Angel Creek. So it was a dream come true to pitch a tent in the campground on the west side of Brighty’s stream, named by the great, one-armed canyon explorer John Wesley Powell.
On the mule trip I stayed at nearby Phantom Ranch, my favorite hotel in the world, built of logs and native stone by the Fred Harvey Co. in the 1920s. It has a corral for the mules, snug cabins and a rustic dining hall that serves steak and baked potato dinners, with chocolate cake for dessert.
After supper I’d sit on the smooth stone beach by the big river, cooling my blistered feet, waiting for God
to switch on the stars while the red-black Vishnu schist and pink Zoroaster granite canyon walls disappeared around me.
Nothing lasts forever, or everything does in one form or another; I don’t know which, but in a place like that I think big thoughts. And I feel lucky to be alive in America, beautiful from coast to coast and from top to bottom. Bottom, especially.
